EECP is a noninvasive, FDA-approved therapy that improves blood flow to the heart, primarily used to treat chronic angina and certain heart conditions. It is also known to improve several others such as (but not limited to) erectile dysfunction and brain related injuries/trauma. Overview
Enhanced External Counter pulsation (EECP) is an outpatient treatment designed for people with chronic stable angina or heart disease who have not responded adequately to medications or are not candidates for surgery or stenting. It is noninvasive and involves the use of inflatable cuffs wrapped around the legs and buttocks that rhythmically inflate and deflate in sync with the heartbeat.
How EECP Works
During EECP therapy, three sets of cuffs are placed on the calves, thighs, and buttocks. These cuffs inflate during diastole (when the heart relaxes) to push blood back toward the heart, increasing coronary artery perfusion. They deflate just before systole (heart contraction), reducing the heart’s workload and making it easier to pump blood out. This process not only improves immediate blood flow but also stimulates the endothelium of blood vessels, promoting long-term improvements in vascular function and potentially encouraging the formation of new blood vessel pathways (angiogenesis and arteriogenesis).
Treatment Protocol
A standard EECP course typically involves 35 one-hour sessions, usually five days a week over seven weeks. (It is possible in some cases to double up on treatments and accomplish them in 3.5 weeks, depending on your diagnosis.) Patients lie on a padded table while a technician monitors the ECG to time the cuff inflations accurately. Oxygen levels and pressure waves are also monitored to ensure safety and effectiveness.
Benefits
- Reduces angina severity: About 80–85% of patients experience significant symptom relief, which can last up to three years .
- Improves exercise tolerance: Patients may walk longer distances or climb stairs with less chest pain.
- Enhances heart function: Studies show improved pumping efficiency in patients with ischemic heart failure.
- Reduces medication dependence: Some patients can decrease their reliance on anti-anginal drugs .
Eligibility and Limitations
EECP is primarily recommended for patients with chronic, stable angina (Class III or IV) who are poor candidates for surgical interventions. It is not suitable for unstable angina or acute coronary syndromes, which require emergency care
. EECP may also benefit patients with heart failure, peripheral artery disease, or cerebrovascular disease, though coverage and clinical evidence are strongest for stable angina.
Safety and Side Effects
EECP is generally well-tolerated, with minor side effects such as skin irritation or leg discomfort. Because it is noninvasive, it avoids the risks associated with surgery or stenting.
In summary, EECP is a safe, noninvasive therapy that enhances blood flow to the heart, reduces angina symptoms, and improves quality of life for patients with chronic heart conditions who have limited treatment options.
